When you start planning a move, one of the first things you'll probably start collecting is boxes. And indeed, you will need a lot of boxes to pack up your things. But boxes are far from the only moving supply you will need. The following are some other important moving supplies that you should look into borrowing, renting, or purchasing before moving day.
Tape
Rather than just folding your boxes shut, you will want to tape them for greater stability. Look for packing tape with strings running down its length, which is much sturdier than standard packing tape. A brand that comes on a one-hand dispenser will make your life easier, too, since you won't constantly have to reach for the scissors.
Multi-colored Markers
While you can make it through a move with just a black Sharpie, it really is better to have several colors of makers. This way, you can color-code your boxes, using a different color for each room, which makes them easier to sort out as you unpack.
A Dolly
Moving heavy or large furniture is much easier with a dolly. The simplest type has two wheels and a tall rack so you can lean items against it. You then use the handles to push it or pull it, depending on what's most comfortable. Many moving truck rental companies rent out dollies, so if you're renting a moving truck, this is likely the easiest way to come by one.
Moving Straps
Moving straps are thick nylon straps that you wrap around your body and use to hold heavy boxes or other items. They can be really helpful when two people are standing on either side of a large appliance in an attempt to move it together. You can buy them at most home goods stores pretty inexpensively, and some moving truck rental companies lease them out.
Bubble Wrap
While you might be able to get away with wrapping some things in old newspaper or tissue paper, you will want to have some bubble wrap on hand, too. It's unbeatable for protecting more fragile and valuable items.
Blankets
Make sure you have a good supply of either old blankets or cheap moving blankets. You can use these to cover furniture and other items if it is raining or to slide items across the floor without making scratches.
