Renting A Storage Unit? Make Sure You Can Get Things Out Easily

Blog

Many people rent storage units each year, and some of those people, in spite of their intentions, never return to their storage units again once their things are inside. They pay for the space month after month, but they don't retrieve the items. This is basically a waste of time and money. If you are about to rent a storage unit, try doing the things below to make sure you actually can access your items as needed.

1. If you don't need it, get rid of it.

Don't just toss everything you are not currently using into the storage unit without discrimination. If there are items you are pretty sure you won't need or use again, either donate them or throw them away. If your storage unit is loaded with unnecessary stuff, you probably won't bother to visit and dig out those one or two items you do actually want. The less you store, the more accessible it will be. Storing less can also save you money since you can rent a smaller storage unit.

2. Label your boxes clearly and completely.

If you find yourself wondering which of 12 boxes the item you want is in, you will probably avoid retrieving that item altogether. Make sure you organize your boxes well, placing similar items together. Label each box clearly with its contents. Don't just write "kitchen items," for example. Write "toaster, spatulas, and salt shakers" if that's what's in the box. When you position the boxes in your storage unit, make sure the labels are facing a direction where you can easily see them.

3. Create shorter stacks.

Instead of renting the smallest possible storage unit and stacking things to the ceiling, rent a slightly larger unit so you can stack boxes just three or four high. Unstacking the won't be as cumbersome, and you'll be able to visit the storage unit alone to find what you need. With really tall stacks, you may need a helper, which might keep you from visiting when nobody else is available.

4. Rent a storage unit nearby.

Also consider the location of your storage unit. If possible, choose one that is along a route you drive often. This way, you won't have to make an extra trip just to retrieve your items, and you are more likely to actually stop.

Storing items is convenient. Abandoning them in storage really is not. With the tips above, you're more likely to actually take items back out of storage when you need them.
